Read about Jo who decided to train to be a barber!
Jo Paske joined the Level 2 barbering course in September 2019 and spoke to us about what made her choose this creative course…
“I found myself at a crossroads at 40 years old. I had done several different jobs, ones I loved and some not so much. This said, I never really felt like I found my passion. I’ve always been very creative with an eye for detail, a flare in design, making things look good. Along with this, I have always been the type of person to hope everyone is happy and feels good about themselves. What better way to do both, and train to be a barber I thought!
I toyed with the idea and tried to create an opportunity in my life to begin studying. Redundancy was looming but I turned it around and grabbed the new start, a new chapter. Barbering here I come!
It can often be a bit of a roller coaster, can I do it? What if I am not ever going to build up the speed? What will I say to a client? What if I fail? Things go around in my mind, it’s all so different to anything I’ve done before.
Half of the battle is already won in facing my fears and that is why I want this. I want to learn a skill and in the barbering industry. The other half takes some courage, picking up the tools, reading and retaining, learning and transferring, getting out there to find clients.
These things that take courage are made easier by firstly remembering this: ‘everyone is feeling the same and is having these bouts of nerves’. We are in it together though, supporting each other. The tutors are there every step of the way. No question is ever too silly to ask and nothing is ever any trouble. The encouragement is never in short supply. It’s inspiring; their knowledge and my passion to learn, pass and be confident. To move on then into the industry and to keep learning in order to always be the best I can at providing the barbering experience.”
