During the winter months our skin needs a little extra TLC; that’s due to the extremes of weather that we experience every day. Going from inside where you have the heating on, out into the cold where the wind is howling, or its raining, can have a huge negative impact on your skin. Skin loves consistency so going in and out often results in your skin not looking its best. There are lots of other factors that contribute to making your feel a little tighter, drier and even more dull than it usually would in the winter.
During the colder months, the humidity levels also drop meaning that your skin needs to work harder to maintain adequate hydration. All in all, this is why you should pay as close attention to your skin during the winter as you probably already do during the summer. Of course, for lots of you, that might mean that you would normally be having a few facials done in a relaxing salon environment. In 2021, a trip to your beauticians is sadly not possible. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t recreate that experience at home, or that you should give up on practising a good skincare routine. That’s why we’ve put together a few of our favourite recipes for some homemade face masks and scrubs. Read on to find out The Norwich School of Beauty’s favourite at home face mask recipes.
DIY Facial Scrub
There are lots of ways to exfoliate and brighten your skin at home by just using a few household ingredients that will no doubt already be floating around. DIY facial scrubs are particularly fabulous for the skin because they are made of all-natural ingredients. Here are our two favourite, very simple facial scrub recipes.
Mattifying Kiwi Face Scrub
- 1 whole Kiwi (peeled and mashed)
- 2 tsp brown sugar
- A few drops of olive oil
Stir all ingredients together, mixing well. Gently rub into the skin in a circular motion for three to five minutes. Remove with warm water.
Rejuvenating Coffee Scrub
- ½ cup fresh ground coffee (fresh are best, but dry used grounds will work too – use fine grounds as coarse grounds might be too harsh for sensitive skin)
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup melted coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Mix all ingredients together well in a mixing bowl until they are well combined. Gently rub into the skin (face and body if you want) for several minutes. Rinse off thoroughly.
DIY Face Mask
Hyperpigmentation-tackling turmeric face mask
- 1 tbsp of fresh turmeric/turmeric powder
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 tbsp of honey
- ½ smashed avocado
Mix all ingredients together well in a mixing bowl until they are well combined. Apply to the skin. Leave on for 3 minutes. Repeat twice a week for five weeks for best results.
Anti-Inflammatory Eczema Soothing Face Mask For Sensitive Or Irritable Skin
- 1 tablespoon oatmeal
- 1 teaspoon raw honey
- ½ teaspoon water
Mix all ingredients together well in a mixing bowl until they are well combined. Apply to the skin. Leave on for 5 minutes.
